The early colonies had some borders by longitude or latitude and we just kept on with it like the stubborn asses that we are.

Colorado: "Fuck rivers, we are going all in on latitude and longitude!"

Utah: "That sounds awesome, we are also going to go all in!"

    Wyoming: "Fuck Utah!"

It always bothered me that the USA has some weird internal borders. Why is it a line? Why? That is wrong on so many levels.

Every US state has at least one straight line segment for a border except for Hawaii (duh). Not in an infinitesimal way, they all have a long straight line somewhere.

        Idaho: Oregon smells sexy.
        Montana: So do you.

Okay I learned this one in elementary school when I was like 6. A lovely school called Hellgate Elementary.

Congress decided to follow the peaks of the Bitterroot range and the Continental divide. These high points created a barrier for travel.

Discover how Montana got its shape, including how Congress created its jagged western border with Idaho along the Rocky Mountains.

Some of our borders are natural or caused by conflict like yours, but others are a bunch of politicians dividing land they've never seen. The squares are all the latter situation

Europeans complaining about straight lines on a border when they made 2/3rds of the world have them.
