There is zero reason for comments to be open on music videos on YouTube. I hate when it tries to show me that rubbish.

Edit: ooh, unpopular opinion! Well, I stand by it, they might as well be a write-only medium as far as I'm concerned - perhaps the comment authors have a nice experience sharing but I'll be damned if I have the slightest interest in what they have to say.

I guess I should make sure my will makes them play Lesbian Seagull by Engelbert Humperdinck before the show's over.

I felt the same when they added the comments feature to YouTube music. I came around though, personally. It's nice to see comments from people enjoying the same music and talking about their favourite tracks.

I've literally never looked at the comments on YouTube music, it's a feature I have absolutely no interest in. I also don't care how many other people have liked a given song.

It's absolutely baffling to me why YouTube thought the social media features were something anyone wanted.

Well, probably because there are people that do want it. It's fine that you don't and it's relatively unobtrusive to ignore it, so your needs are catered for as well.

YouTube comments in general are so predictable, for some reason. You've got your classics, like the sex bots and the "Just leaving a comment for the Algorithm". But you can also be sure, for example, that if there's a funny oneliner in a video, that one of the top comments will be a direct quote of that oneliner with nothing added.

I guess, to some degree, it's just the socialization reactions like you might have when watching a movie together. They don't have to be deep and meaningful.
But I almost wish there were separate comment sections, one for the shallow reactions and jerking off the Algorithm, and one for people actually wanting to add something. There's often lots of interesting parts about videos where I'd like to know what others have to say about it, but good luck finding those comments.

About the one-liner ones, i have a feeling those contribute a fair bit to search indexing, since I'm able to find those videos when I search for those quotes, even if the description or title doesn't have them. Same reason I can find songs there by looking up their lyrics

I once saw one that said a specific date, except they set up some automation to edit the comment and update the date to be today's date every day. They had thousands of replies from people who "also" watched today, what a coincidence.

Apparently no one stopped to think why there are months worth of people also watching today.

This is like literally every top level comment on Hacker News threads:

“That reminds me of a project I just did where I built out a super duper complex system in a short amount of time and overcame many obstacles and it’s still in production today with over 10m daily users.”

I took this to be feedback to the creator. The commenter tries to communicate that they liked the joke. A creator can never know if their jokes land, after all.

Why are people using this feature that clearly no-one wants?
